Majoring in Trumpet Performance, Jonathan Ingber received his Master of Music Degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1988, studying under Charles Schlueter, Principal Trumpet (Ret.) of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He received his Bachelor of Music Degree, Cum Laude, from the University of Southern California in 1986, studying under Boyde Hood, Trumpet (Ret.) of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Jonathan was Principal Trumpet with Lyric Opera San Diego from 2003 to 2011 and was a Substitute/Extra with the San Diego Symphony, Opera and Chamber Orchestras for more than twenty years. Performances on the Symphony’s Pops Series included working under the direction of music icons John Williams, Marvin Hamlisch, Michael Feinstein and Frank Sinatra Jr. He also has performed in ensembles backing-up Michael Crawford and Doc Severinsen, and has performed with members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Jonathan has played with local pit orchestras for the Joffrey Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre, for musicals with Starlight Theater and for concerts and nautical ceremonies with the Grand Pacific Band. He has appeared in recital, and as a guest soloist with the Tifereth Israel Community Orchestra in 2003 and the North Coast Symphony in 2008. In 2011, Jonathan premiered Robert Weller’s “Trumpet Concerto” with the Palomar Symphony Orchestra. Jonathan co-founded the quintet, Premier Brass, in 1990. The ensemble has performed throughout San Diego County and in Baja California. Engagements have included recitals, pops concerts, weddings, religious services, grand openings, educational presentations and graduations ceremonies. Other local chamber ensembles with which he has performed include Westwind Brass, Classic Brass and Camelot Strings.

An Adjunct Professor of Music at Palomar College since 2004, Jonathan currently serves as a trumpet instructor for the Applied Music program. Previous assignments have included teaching courses in music history and theory, and conducting the Palomar Brass Ensemble and the Palomar Concert Band. For ten years he worked in a similar capacity at MiraCosta College, including a stint conducting the Windjammers Concert Band. Jonathan is the conductor of the San Diego Civic Youth Orchestra Wind Ensemble, a position he has held since 2004. A CYO alumnus himself, he and his wife are very proud that their daughter is also an alumnus and a professional violinist. Jonathan has been a brass coach for the Carlsbad and Oceanside Unified School Districts since 2010 and 2025, respectively. Early in his career he was a Music Consultant for the San Diego Unified School District and also taught trumpet to middle and high school students at The Bishop’s School in La Jolla. Over the years, coaching has taken him to many other schools throughout San Diego County, working with students in all grade levels.
